Apple Valley girls’ basketball won 71-61 against conference rival Eagan in overtime on Tuesday.

“I told them to play with swag, believe it or not,” said coach Jeremy Gordon when asked what he did to pump his girls up during the game.

The Eagles started the game on the wrong end of a 13-4 run in the first half, putting them down 26-18. However, the ladies were able to end the half on a 12-0 run, putting them up 30-26.

The girls came for the second half and jumped out to a 13 point lead, but Eagan slowly came back when the Eagles started getting in foul trouble late in the second half.

Eagles guard Lyndsey Robson stopped any chance of Eagan jumping out to a big lead. She finished with a game-high 24 points, and was on fire from the perimeter, sinking five threes.

“Yeah I actually haven’t been shooting my best these last two games,” said Robson. “I’ve been shooting better from three-point range, I’ve been shooting a lot. I’m expecting to have a better three-point shot.”

The Eagles found themselves down by two in the closing seconds of the second half. With the game on the line, center and co-captain Taylor Wangerin hit the game-tying layup as the clock expired, sending the game into overtime.

Wangerin played an important role on defense throughout the game, and was able to score in the paint with great efficiency. She finished with 13 points.

The Eagles were able to rely on clutch free throws from Erin Baxter, Brynne Rolland, and Robson in overtime, and were able to cruise to a ten-point victory.

With this victory, the Eagles move to 8-2 on the season, with their next game at home against Burnsville this Friday at 7 pm. Good luck ladies!
