Behind a career night from senior Cameron Kirksey, the Apple Valley boys’ basketball team beat Lakeville South 105-80 Tuesday night, jumping into the push towards the postseason.

The Eagles jumped out to a big lead early, holding a 17-5 advantage just 4:45 into the game.

For Kirksey, his 27 points marked a career high–something he attributes to his offseason work.

“In the offseason, I was just trying to work on my shooting, and really my all around game,” Kirksey said. “As a senior, I knew I was going to be playing a big role and I just accepted it.”

Kirksey was particularly effective in the post and on transition, using his 6-foot-6 frame to earn a lot of easy buckets down low, as well as blocking multiple shots on the defensive end.

“He’s kind of a mismatch problem for other teams because he can post up and also play the wing,” said Apple Valley head coach Zach Goring.

Kirksey had plenty of support from his teammates as well, as the Eagles shot 68.3% from the field. Junior guard Gary Trent Jr. matched Kirksey’s 27 points, and Brock Bertram added 18. Tre Jones contributed a double-double, with 13 points and 10 assists.

Tuesday’s game marked the beginning of the end for the Eagles, as they will conclude the regular season by playing five of their final seven games at home. With four starters having state tournament experience, a veteran core is key for Apple Valley come playoff time.

“For Cam and Brock, this is their fourth year with us…they’ve been through it and they know what we’re looking for in the playoffs,” said Goring.

The final stretch of the regular season will provide the Eagles good preparation for the playoffs, as four of their final seven games are against section opponents.

“We’re definitely more experienced,” Kirksey said. “We know what it takes to get [to the championship].”

With the win, Apple Valley moves to 18-1 on the season. They host Farmington in a conference matchup on Friday, January 29.
