Last Saturday Apple Valley football, basketball, and baseball players volunteered to help pack meals for Feed My Starving Children.

The event took place at a former Rainbow Foods grocery store in Apple Valley. AVHS athletes joined churches, businesses, and other volunteer groups in a Mega-Pack event that took place from February 1-6. The end goal was to pack enough meals to feed 11,000 kids for an entire year.

Although the meal packing helped kids dealing with hunger around the world, it also made an impact right here in Apple Valley. “It’s really humbling,” said senior football and basketball player Aaron Ertz. “It helps you realize how lucky we all are.”

In the six-day meal pack, Feed My Starving Children drew approximately 20,000 volunteers. Apple Valley players, coaches and families helped pack for 2 hours on Saturday, February 6t,h beginning at 8:30 in the morning.

After playing Eastview the night before, the boys basketball program showed up with around 45 players ready to help the next morning. “Feed My Starving Children is an excellent cause to put together meals for, but it’s also a good team-building activity,” said boys basketball coach Zach Goring.

In just two hours, a total of 301,320 meals were packed for kids around the world. That is enough to feed 826 kids for a whole year. “Feed My Starving Children is just one of the smallest things that we can do to give back to the community,” said junior football and baseball player Noah Sanders. “I think it is something our whole athletic program should do more often.”

Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit organization that helps feed starving children around the world. FMSC relies on volunteers in all aspects of its organization from packing to donations.
