Super Sophomore Could Take Over Next Year

Gable Steveson celebrates after winning the state title at 220 pounds

Where one great career ends, another begins.

That certainly seems to be the case for Apple Valley wrestler Gable Steveson, who won his second straight state championship at 220 pounds Saturday night.

Steveson, who is already ranked in the nation’s top ten overall wrestlers as a sophomore, completed a perfect 46-0 season, defeating St. Michael-Albertville’s Evan Foster by tech fall.

On a night that saw fellow Eagle Mark Hall set a state record with his sixth individual title, Steveson continued to present himself as the next star wrestler at Apple Valley.

“Somebody’s got to take over,” said Apple Valley head coach Dalen Wasmund. “It’s nice to have somebody that successful that kids can look up to.”

With Saturday’s win, Gable matches his brother—former Eagle wrestler Bobby—with two Minnesota state titles.

“We’re always battling on who’s the better wrestler,” Gable said. “I work off him, get better off him…beating his record is gonna be a big deal.”

Beating that record is no long shot, either. Even though Bobby also won a title in Indiana, his younger brother has the size, strength, and athleticism to earn the four titles that would put him atop the Steveson brothers’ list.

Apple Valley has another one to watch.
