What’s In The News: 1976 vs. 2016

In September of 1976, Apple Valley High School officially opened its doors for the first time. A lot has changed within the walls over its forty years of existence, but it is safe to say that we have experienced even greater changes throughout the world in that time. Steve Jobs founded Apple Computer in his garage in April of 1976. The Apple Watch, the iPhone 6 Plus, and the MacBook Air are just few of many Apple products that are powering the market today. Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford battled it out for the role of 39th President of the United States in 1976. This November, the nation will vote to decide the 45th president, with current candidates ranging from Hillary Clinton to Donald Trump. Whether it be Olympian Bruce Jenner or mother and gender-equality activist Caitlyn Jenner, let’s take a look at what’s in the news, both then and now…
1976
- January 18th, 1976 – Super Bowl X: Shaw leads Steelers to a 21-17 victory over the Cowboys
Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw and wide receiver Lynn Shuck, also named MVP of Super Bowl X, worked together to bring the Pittsburgh Steelers to a victory over the Dallas Cowboys.
- April 1st, 1976 – Stephen Wozniak and Steve Jobs found Apple Computer in the garage of Jobs’ parents’ house in Cupertino, California. Apple 1 Computer released April 11th.
Yep, you read that right. Apple began in a garage.
- May 15th, 1976 – Barbara Peterson of Minnesota crowned Miss USA
Barbara Peterson, student of Edina High School and St. Olaf College, became the first Miss USA from Minnesota in the history of the pageant.
- August 21st, 1976 – 21st Olympic Games close in Montreal, Canada. Bruce Jenner crushes record and wins gold in decathlon
Bruce Jenner took home a gold medal in the Montreal Olympic games of 1976, breaking the world record in the decathlon with 8,618 points.
- October 6th, 1976 – Bombing of Cubana Flight 455
Cubana flight 455 was taken down by two C-4 explosives bombs just off the coast of a Barbados airport. Flight 455 was a routine, scheduled commercial, passenger flight, and the US government was accused of being an accomplice to the attack.
- November 2nd, 1976 – Jimmy Carter elected U.S. president
On November 2nd of 1976, democratic candidate Jimmy Carter beat out Republican candidate Gerald Ford for the position of 39th President of the United States. Carter received 297 electoral votes while Ford received 240.

- February 7th, 2016 – Super Bowl 2016: Broncos’ defense dominates as Peyton Manning wins second title
Peyton Manning ended his 18-year career, leading his team to victory with a 24-10 win over the Carolina Panthers in the 50th Super Bowl.

After a few extreme advancements in technology in 1976, Apple has created a gadget that wraps up your whole life and places it around your wrist.
- December 21st, 2015 – Wrong contestant crowned at Miss Universe 2015
In a somewhat awkward series of events, host Steve Harvey of the Miss Universe Pageant 2015 wrongfully crowned Miss Colombia as the winner of Miss Universe. Just moments later, the crown was placed on the head of Miss Philippines, the original winner.
- September 25th, 2015 – Caitlyn Jenner legally changes name and gender
After revealing her new identity on the cover of the July issue of Vanity Fair magazine, former Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner officially became Caitlyn Jenner on September 25th.
- March 20th, 2016 – Obama lands in Cuba as first US president to visit in nearly a century
Obama became the first US president to touch down in Cuba since Calvin Coolidge in 1928, and since the revolution led by Fidel Castro in 1959.
- June 16th, 2015 – Donald Trump Announces Presidential Bid
“We need somebody that literally will take this country and make it great again. We can do that. So ladies and gentlemen, I am officially running for president of the United States,” Trump announced. He is still aiming for the Republican presidential nomination today.
