A Year to Remember in Apple Valley Athletics
Jack Rosenthal, Sports Writer
With twelve individual state competitors, two individual state champions, one third place state finish, and one state championship, it’s been quite a year for Apple Valley in athletics.
Let’s recap how our teams did this year:
Boys Cross Country
The boys cross country team had one of their best seasons in recent history, highlighted by a second place finish at the Eagle Invitational, their best finish at the meet since 2000. Four of the top fifteen finishers were Apple Valley runners, while three other Valley runners finished within the top 30. The team had another second place finish at the St. Michael Albertville meet with two top ten finishers...
Girls Cross Country
The girls cross country team had a solid season this year, and were able to send sophomore Molly Moynihan to the state meet at St. Olaf. Moynihan finished second at the section meet, and performed very well at the state meet with fellow cross country runner Robert Hapke. The team will look to continue their growth and success next year, and hopefully send more runners to state next year....
Boys Soccer
The boys soccer team had a rough season this year, finishing with a 6-11 record. The highlight of the season was Valley’s underdog 2-1 win over Park, the team that ousted them from the previous year’s section semifinals. The team also got big wins over Robbinsdale Cooper, Lakeville South, Rochester Century, and Shakopee. This season also marked head coach Chuck Scanlon’s last season c...
Girls Soccer
The girls soccer team had a tough go this season, pulling out a 5-10-1 record. The team, however, had a huge game against crosstown rival Eastview, upsetting the Lightning in a 2-1 overtime thriller. The team also had wins over Stillwater, Hastings, Southwest, and Farmington, and tied their first game of the year to Owatonna. Defender Sidney Bethke also won the Athena Award, recognizing he...
Girls Tennis
The girls tennis squad had a rough season this year, finishing with a 3-9-2 record. The team was able to get some close wins over Simley, Farmington, and Visitation, though. Hopefully the team will be able to turn it around next year and be able to win many more matches.
Football
The football team had a solid season this year, finishing the year with a 5-5-1 record. By far the team’s best win was against crosstown rival Eastview in the Battle for the Apple. In the tightest game the Eagles had all year, the Eagles pulled out a 7-6 win over the Lightning in the fourth quarter of the game, bringing the Battle of the Apple trophy home to Apple Valley for the first time sin...

The volleyball team had a great season this year, finishing with a 14-8 record. This year was highlighted by winning the annual Aerie Invitational. The team cruised to two easy victories in the round of 16 and quarterfinals of the tournament. Swim and Dive
Both the boys and the girls swim and dive teams had some tremendous seasons this year. Perhaps the biggest highlights of both of these teams were their showings at the section swim finals. The boys team had three swimmers finish within the top ten at section finals, while two other swimmers finished within the top twenty. The girls medley relay team finished fourth at the section finals, 2 seconds off fr...
Boys Basketball
What a tremendous season it was for the boys basketball team. Led by Gary Trent Jr. and Tre Jones, the Eagles only lost two games all year en route to a third place finish in the state tournament. The Eagles’ repeat dreams were crushed in the state semifinals against Hopkins, but were able to get a little redemption in their third place victory against Osseo. During the regular season, the Eagles only s...

Sidney Bethke had a monster season. She had some top finishes and ended up advancin...
Wrestling
Words really can’t describe Apple Valley’s dominance in wrestling. Eleven straight state titles, 24 in total. There is no school in the state more dominant than Apple Valley when it comes to wrestling. And the Eagles continued that tradition of excellence this year. Perhaps one of the greatest high school wrestlers ever, Mark Hall has won twelve state titles for wrestling: six team titles,...
Boys Hockey
The boys hockey team celebrated its 40th year of playing at Apple Valley. The team donned some new throwback uniforms to celebrate, harkening back to their championship run in 1996. Unfortunately, the team was unable to replicate the same magic they had twenty years ago. They finished with a 9-16-1 record. The team was able to snatch some big wins, however, including a 4-3 overtime win over Shakopee and wins...
Girls Hockey
The girls hockey team skated to a 7-17-2 record this year, but the team made national headlines with their unbelievable performance in the section quarterfinals against East Ridge. Although they lost 2-3 against East Ridge, the Eagles were caught in an epic marathon game. The game lasted for six overtime periods--121 minutes and 58 seconds to be exact--making it the longest girls hockey game in...
Baseball
The baseball team has gotten off to a 2-4-6 start so far, a pretty solid start, but there’s definitely room for improvement. Their wins came against Farmington and Eagan. Like softball, they too have battled injuries, but look to finish the season strong.
Softball
The softball team has struggled somewhat this season, getting off to a 1-9-4 start so far. Their only win has been against Osseo back in April. They've dealt with injury issues, but are hoping to make a run as they close the season.

Track and Field
The boys and girls track teams have been doing very well this year. Olivia Anger, Bailey Roberts, Josh Hylland, and Robert Hapke are only a few of the track runners for Apple Valley who have done really well on the track. Pole vaulter Amanda Sonnenberg and discus thrower Kieran McKeag are also just a few of the field athletes that have performed very well this season. Sidney Bethke, a member of track and field, a...
