Back On The Ice
As the 2016-17 season approaches, the Apple Valley girls’ hockey team is ready for the puck drop, with new goals and more experience.
After finishing eighth place in the South Suburban Conference and losing to East Ridge in a historic game in sections, the team is ready to bounce back this season.
“We have a lot of talent and a lot of experience; it should be a really good year for us,” said coach Don Erdall. “We can’t use the ‘young’ excuse anymore–it’s time to step up and do it.”
Experience will be a big factor for the team this season. Only three seniors were part of last year’s group, which means that this year’s roster includes many returning varsity players.
“Last year we had the best team chemistry that I have been part of,” said senior captain Amy Breckner. “This year, with everyone returning, it’s going to be nothing but better.”
“The conference is going to be pretty tough,” said Erdall. Lakeville South, Eagan, Eastview and Lakeville North managed to lead the conference for the past two years and they are going to be tough to defeat.
When asked what goals the team is aiming at this season, junior captain Sophia Leong answered, “Section finals.” For Breckner: “The state tournament.”
Erdall emphasized the need for the team to stay healthy in order to accomplish their goals. “I do think it’s achievable this year. On paper we have a good chance of going to state, but hockey is not played on paper.”
The Eagles will begin their season at home this Thursday at 7 pm against the Woodbury Royals.
