1. The License Plate Game

This could possibly be the most popular game there is when it comes to road trips. It’s pretty simple. While you pass other cars, check off the states as you see them on the license plates. The goal is to check off all 50 before you get to your destination.

2. The ABC Game

The ABC Game is another classic. One person in the car will start off with the letter “A.” That person’s job is to find a word that starts with “A” on a road sign. Once they have, another person will have “B” and has to do the same. The game continues until you go through the entire alphabet.

3. I’m Going Camping

This game is a fun way to test your memory. Much like the ABC Game, one person will start with the letter “A.” However, instead of finding a word on a road sign, you have to name something that starts with that letter. The next person must repeat the previous item and choose another one that starts with their letter. It should go something like this:

“I’m going camping and I’m going to bring an apple.”

“I’m going camping and I’m going to bring an apple and a bear.”

This would once again continue until you reach the end of the alphabet.

4. Sorry I’m Late

If you’re a movie lover, you’ll love this one. Each person goes around and gives reasons why they were “late.” However, each reason is a description of a popular movie. Whoever figures out what movie it is first, wins that round.

Ex. “Sorry I’m late, I had to return this little girl back to her bedroom without anyone knowing.”

Answer: Monsters Inc.

5. The Cow Game

If you are traveling through big cities, sorry–this one isn’t for you. However, it’s a great one for traveling in the Midwest. Whenever you see cows on your side of the car, count them and shout out how many there are. However, if you see a cemetery on your side of the car, all of your cows die. The person with the most cows at the end of the ride wins.

6. Only Three Words

This one can keep everyone entertained for hours. Each person can only contribute 3 words to a story at a time, the next person must then build upon those words. They can be as similar to–or as different from–the previous ones as they want! The goal is to make one big story as a group.

Ex.

Person 1: Once there was…

Person 2: …a kangaroo named…

Person 3: …Fred. He loved…

Person 4: …riding his bike…

7. 20 Questions

Another classic game. One person in the car has to think of a person, place or thing. Once they have thought of something, it is everyone else’s job to figure out what it is by asking questions. If no one can figure it out in 20 questions, then the person, place or thing may be revealed.

10. Related Words

To start this game, one person chooses a word. That person must make a list of related things and end with the same word they started with. The next person that goes must start with the same word and make a list as well. Whoever makes the shortest list, wins that round.

Ex.

Person 1

  • Water
  • Lake
  • Ocean
  • Tuna
  • Sandwhich
  • Lunch
  • Drink
  • Water

Person 2

  • Water
  • Ocean
  • Seafood
  • Dinner
  • Restaurant

Person 2 would win for having a shorter list.

By playing these games you are sure to be on the road to having an amazing vacation. Safe travels!
