Thanksgiving and Black Friday Experiences

Senior Bereket Ketema doesn’t celebrate the traditional Thanksgiving. “Since I did not celebrate Thanksgiving, it was nice to sleep in and eat good food. Since my family had work off, we got to spend a lot of time together and went to an Ethiopian restaurant.”

“I like the tradition of having dinner with your family and talking about what you are thankful for,” said sophomore Sophia Lind. “I think Black Friday shopping right after Thanksgiving defeats the whole purpose of saying you're thankful for what you have but then going out and buying a bunch of stuff mindlessly.”

Although he went shopping, freshman Sam Korn thinks “the craze is getting a bit out of hand as the years go on. I know that people want to get everyone the best gifts they can but it messes up the point of the holiday.”

Like many other high school students that worked on Thanksgiving, senior Kelly Carrillo had to celebrate with her family around her work schedule. “I had my family make Thanksgiving dinner early because I worked at 5 and got out at 10. I went shopping right after work from 11pm to 8am the next day. I took a nap from around 8am to 1pm, then went shopping from 3pm to 10pm. Throughout the 18 hours t...

Senior Hugh Jones also worked this Thanksgiving weekend: “I worked early on Friday and then after work I did a little shopping at the Mall of America. For Thanksgiving I traveled to Wisconsin and had a good time celebrating with my family.”

“I bought a lot of gifts for myself and I had a great time shopping with my friends,” said senior Lexi Kocken. “The only bad thing was that I didn't go to bed for 34 hours.”
