A lot happened last week in the world of Apple Valley athletics. Here’s everything in a nutshell:

Boys Basketball

The guys were able to dominate last week with huge wins against Cretin-Durham Hall and Owatonna.

Their game against Cretin was their home opener, and they were able to defend their home court in a great team performance. They won by a score of 79-51.

Junior guard Tre Jones led the way with 27 points, five assists, and seven rebounds. Senior Mason Morse finished with ten points. Jones was also nominated for Minnesota Player of the Week by Minnesota Basketball Hub for his performance.

The Eagles returned for another home game on Thursday against Owatonna. The Eagles put a beating on Owatonna, winning by a commanding score of 95-51.

Jones nearly finished with a triple-double, tallying 14 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists. Juniors Nathan Macho and Luke Martens finished with 13 points, and senior Kevin Totusek finished with 11 points.

The guys have one game this week: an away game against Lakeville North on Tuesday at 7 pm. It’s sure to be a very competitive and intense game, so make sure to go out and show your support.

Girls Basketball

The girls had one game last Tuesday, dominating on the road against Eagan by a commanding score of 60-36.

Senior captain Lyndsey Robson led the way with 19 points. Junior Brynne Rolland had 17 points, and senior captain Sara Teske had 14 points.

This is just one win in what has been a great start to their season. They’ve already toppled the defending state champions, Minnetonka, on the road in their first game of the year, and also beat fourth-ranked St. Michael-Albertville in commanding fashion.

The girls play against Lakeville North and East Ridge on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively. Both of these games are home games at 7 pm.

Girls Hockey

The ladies had two home games last week, one against Farmington and the other against Eastview.

They played Farmington on Tuesday and skated to an unfortunate 1-2 loss to the Tigers.

They followed that game up with a big game against Eastview on Saturday. The team was looking to get a big win to get back on track, and what better opponent than your crosstown rivals.

The ladies secured a 3-1 win over the Lightning, the first time they had beaten Eastview in the last two years.

Senior Amy Breckner finished the game with a goal and an assist.  Freshmen Lily Leong and Krista Martinson also finished with goals.

The Eagles’ next game is Tuesday at Lakeville North, and they follow that up with another road game on Thursday against Park.

Boys Hockey

Last week didn’t go according to plan for the Eagles, losing two home games on Thursday and Saturday.

The team was hopeful going into their game last Thursday against the Farmington Tigers. Unfortunately, despite the Eagles two-goal lead after the first period, the Farmington Tigers sealed their win with an empty-net goal to win 4-2.

Junior Brandon Penz netted his fifth goal of the season six minutes into the first period and was followed up with a goal three minutes later by senior Chad Messerich, his second of the season.

Farmington, however, came out strong in the second and were able to tie it up.

Despite a hard effort in the third, Farmington took the lead and the Eagles decided to pull their goalie with a few minutes left to give them a man advantage. Sadly, Farmington finished the game with an empty net goal and a 4-2 win.

Coach Sikich wasn’t very pleased with the outcome of the game. “We had a good 1st period. In the 2nd period, we just got away from our game. They took advantage of the mistakes we made. We had some chances we just couldn’t finish.”

The Eagles attempted to make up for their loss to Farmington in a big rivalry game against Eastview on Saturday, but weren’t able to get the job done, losing by a score of 4-1.

The team got on the board early and finished the first period with a 1-0 lead, but weren’t able to get anything else to go in. They let up two goals in each of the next two periods.

The guys have a big game this Thursday at Lakeville North at 7 pm before heading out to Duluth during winter break.
