This year’s homecoming week tradition of the Powder Puff Football game took place on Monday night. This yearly competition sees the upperclassmen girls pitted against each other in an extremely competitive and sometimes controversial game of flag football.

This year’s game broke tradition by having teams be composed of both seniors and juniors rather than having the teams split by grade level. Only a handful of juniors had signed up for this years’ game.

The coaches for this game were Mrs. Dorsey and Mr. Laurent for the red team, and Mrs. Cody and Mr. Draughn for the yellow team. The referees were Mr. Dirth and Mr. Erdahl.

Apple Valley’s Super Fans led cheers on the sidelines. The student section opted for the bench over bleachers. Like this year’s Powder Puff teams, most of the student section was comprised of seniors.

The game got off to a fast start, with touchdowns and interceptions being traded back and forth. A yellow team interception and touchdown with a two-point conversion had them up 8-0 very early in the game.

Yellow would go on to score on their next drive, but miss the conversion, resulting in a 14-0 lead.

The next drive for each team resulted in interceptions. A score and 2 point conversion for Red would bring the score close to a 14-8 Yellow lead. Yellow responded with a touchdown of their own to extend their lead to 20-8 and after another interception to 26-8.

However, this game wasn’t over yet. Red scored a touchdown to bring the game back into range with a score of 26-14.

With the game nearing a close, Red team opened up the old bag of tricks. Senior Josie Segar picked up the ball and motioned to the referee for a new one when she sprinted down the field for an 80-yard touchdown to close the gap to 26-22.

Yellow was able to hold on in the end and win 26-22 and walk off the field as Powder Puff champions.

The MVP of the game was Senior Reagan Roelofs, ending the game with four rushing touchdowns, an interception, and a two-point conversion, helping lead the Yellow team to victory.
