Eagle Boys Tip Off New Season
Look to repeat as state champs
December 13, 2015
After a second state title in three years, the Apple Valley boys’ basketball team is still hungry for more. With all five starters back, the Eagles are looking to win it all.
“We’re looking to repeat,” said senior captain Cameron Kirksey. “You know, not many teams have that opportunity.”
The chances of another title certainly are promising. Not only are the five starters back, but they also accounted for the Eagles’ top five scorers last season, led by Gary Trent Jr., who averaged 21.2 points per game.
“(The starters) all had great summers playing with our groups, and also playing AAU, so they’ve taken big steps,” said head coach Zach Goring.
While the starting lineup remains strong, the Eagles must replace depth off the bench, as they lost three key seniors to graduation, all of whom averaged 12 minutes per game or more.
“Depth off the bench is something we need to see,” said Goring. “We’re going to need guys that can keep the momentum and keep things going when we need to sub.”
Apple Valley will face a tough schedule in the South Suburban Conference, with a slate featuring 2015 state tournament qualifiers Lakeville North and Shakopee.
“Both return quite a few players from their teams last year,” said Goring.
Whatever the case, senior center Brock Bertram isn’t worried, “We have a lot of experience,” he said. “We’re big, physical, and we know how to play together.”
NOTE:
Apple Valley has started the season 6-1, dropping only its most recent game to #2 Hopkins on Saturday. In that game, Bertram became Apple Valley’s career leader in rebounds.
Apple Valley junior guard Gary Trent, Jr. set a new school record for points in a single game, scoring 46 in a 105-69 win at Chanhassen on November 24. The record was previously held by current Minnesota Timberwolves player Tyus Jones, at 45 points.
Apple Valley’s next game is Tuesday, December 15th at 7:00 pm away at Farmington.
