Behind an early 27-0 lead, and a distinct size advantage, the Apple Valley girls’ basketball team defeated Farmington 72-50 at Apple Valley High School on Tuesday night.

The Eagles’ defense stifled Farmington early on, with the Tigers’ first points coming on two free throws nearly ten minutes into the game.

“Farmington’s a young team, and so we thought we were going to pressure them as much as possible and let them experience some aggressive defense,” said Apple Valley head coach Jeremy Gordon.

That strategy certainly worked, as the Eagles held the Tigers to just 14 points at halftime, and converted many turnovers into fast break points.

Apple Valley’s noticeable size advantage seemed to take a toll on Farmington; the Eagles carry four players listed at 6-feet or taller, compared to the Tigers’ zero.

“We set up a lot of our plays for our height advantage,” said sophomore forward Marie Olson. “We have size on a lot of teams…we’re able to get those blocks and intimidate and shut other people down.”

Olson had an excellent game on the offensive end as well, leading all scorers with 23 points, including making 12 of 13 free throws. “Marie is just a great player who works hard on every single play,” said Gordon. “[She’s] very internally motivated.”

Junior guard Lyndsey Robson added 21 points for the Eagles, and sophomore forward Brynne Rolland added 11.

The win boosts Apple Valley to 4-1 on the season heading into Friday’s rivalry tilt with Eastview. That game will be at 5:45pm at Apple Valley High School.
