Boys’ Hoops Wins Rivalry Clash

Apple Valley’s Gary Trent, Jr. looks to make a play against Eastview on Friday night.

The Apple Valley boys’ basketball team got revenge in a big way Friday night.

The Eagles took down crosstown rival Eastview 95-62 at Apple Valley High School, avenging last year’s loss on the road against the Lightning.

“It’s good to beat those guys,” said Apple Valley head coach Zach Goring. “Last year when we played over there, they simply played better than us.”

Junior guard Gary Trent, Jr. once again led the Eagles in scoring with 27 points, including multiple dunks, to go with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Not only did he lead the scoring on Friday, but Trent also leads the state in total points scored and points per game, with 261 and 32.6, respectively.

“He’s had a great year,” said Goring. “What makes him so hard to guard is his size–he’s six-foot-six as a two guard, and shoots the three really well.”

Apple Valley’s defense was stout as well, holding Eastview to just 62 points.

“We had a lot of energy,” Trent said. “We knew if we came out like that, we could do great things, and that’s what we did.”

Eastview managed to keep the game close through the first half, but Apple Valley began to pull away just before halftime, taking a 50-34 lead into the break. The Eagles stayed aggressive, and Eastview never got closer in the second half.

Jordan Bolton and Cameron Kirksey also had nice games for the Eagles, scoring 18 and 17 points, respectively. All five of Apple Valley’s starters scored in double figures.

Apple Valley reclaims bragging rights over their rivals at least until February 5, 2016, when the teams will meet again at Eastview.

“We had to get them back for what they did to us last year,” said Trent.

NOTE:

Prior to the game on Friday, Apple Valley honored both Trent and point guard Tre Jones, both of whom played on the FIBA World Champion USA U-16 National Team this past summer.”It was a blessing,” Trent said of playing on the team with Jones. “It was everything I hoped for, everything I worked for…next year I gotta go out again and try to go back.”
