Arts Spotlight: Laura Sankary

Laura Sankary

Art is more than just a pastime. For some, art is what they build their life on.

Laura Sankary is in her senior year here at Apple Valley, and has already been accepted into the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Her latest project is a portfolio application to their graphic design program – a field she aims to make a future in.

A long time denizen of the art room, Laura has felt right at home for four years. She will often spend her lunch hour working on projects, taking advantage of the brief yet peaceful sanctuary.

Her life as an artist started very early in elementary school. “I used to trace Pokemon from books and color them in,” said Laura. “Later on I found that I had learned to draw things just by looking at them, and so I did more of that than just tracing.”

“Also in elementary school I found that I really liked painting – it was easy for me, and I liked how the colors blended more easily.”

Her interest in working with pastels also stemmed from their ability to act fluidly and blend. She ultimately chose them as the tool to convey such an important piece.

“The compasses represents me, how I’m still trying to find my way through life – school, jobs, and everything,” said Laura.

The portfolio requires two piece:; one realism, one abstract. Her realism piece has already been completed, while the abstract is a work in progress – and not to be rushed. Laura has taken her time with every detail, no matter how minute. Working with the pastels, she carefully mixes each color until they produce the desired 3D effect.

Laura will continue to perfect her current projects for the time being. In future years she’ll advance further and further toward her dream job as an artist.
